Notes
The first image is a detail from a photograph of the Main Foyer published in George C. Boldt, The Waldorf-Astoria, New York (George C. Boldt, 1903). The second image shows that full plate. The third image–showing a glimpse of these chairs–appeared in the American Architect and Building News from September 1898 (international edition) with the caption: “Corridor Fireplace in the Hotel Waldorf-Astoria, New York, N. Y.” The final image is held at a number of institutions, including Princeton University Library and the Museum of the City of New York and has been frequently republished. See also: David Cathers, Gustav Stickley (London and New York: Phaidon, 2003), 16-7. This photograph (looking east down “Peacock Alley)” in the original Waldorf Astoria probably dates to the late 1920s.
