Notes
Identified only by the caption “Book-cabinet in green oak, strap hinges and fittings in hammered copper,” in The Craftsman, this bookcase has no known model number, though is related to a number of pieces Stickley produced ca. 1902-03. The mitered mullions evident in the line drawing have long been recognized as a construction feature of his early furniture, but the overall aesthetics of the book-cabinet are equally, if not more, important. The vertically oriented rails at the top of the sides are similar to the strategy Stickley employed in the armrests of his Thornden rocker and related forms. In particular, the shape and configuration of the form relate strongly to the China Cabinet shown in the W.B. Moses retail plate no. 102.
See: Todd M. Volpe and Beth Cathers, Treasures of the American Arts and Crafts Movement (New York: Thames & Hudson, 2003): 28-9 for discussion of a similar model.
