Notes
The chronology of Stickley’s first catalog is not well-documented. Stickley went to the Grand Rapids Furniture exposition in July of 1900 where he debuted the line, and by October of that year two separate advertisements for the catalog appeared. Logically, it seems as though he must have brought a catalog or some promotional materials to distribute to interested buyers, yet no evidence of such an effort exists. On October 25th, an advertisement for this line appeared in Furniture World, although the table in lower left of the advertisement was incorrectly labeled. An advertisement appeared in that month’s House Beautiful for the version of the catalog issued by the Tobey Furniture Company in Chicago.
What is known from later catalogs is that a formal announcement of them often lagged behind their release considerably. Clearly, the catalog was in process well before the two versions were advertised and issued, but whether Stickley’s catalog was issued prior to, concurrently, or in response to the Tobey Company’s decision to carry and promote the line remains undocumented.
