An advertisement in the Troy Daily Times, dated March 29, 1901 is the earliest documented reference to this catalog, albeit somewhat obliquely. J. Crawford Green, a retailer at 270 River Street in Troy, advertised “Austrian Oak Furniture from the Workshop of Gustave Stickley” calling it “a revival of old arts and crafts applied to wood and leather.” In mirroring the language used by the catalog, J. Crawford Green’s advertisement confirms that the catalog was in circulation. By referring to the firm as “The Workshop of Gustave Stickley”–as opposed to “The United Crafts”–this advertisement likewise suggests the transition between names has not been completed.
