Notes
This form evolved over time and the construction details likely provide a more accurate way of dating this chest of drawers than the marks. The earlier version appears to be 1/2 inch shorter (according to the catalogs) and has the paneled ends seen in the first photographs of that appeared in Catalogue D. In later publications, the photographic and drawing record may prove to be less helpful, which is why I have dated the construction transition to about 1907 when The Descriptive Price List of Craftsman Furniture lists the dimensions as 51 x 36 x 20, notes: “solid panel on end.” Although subsequent catalogs, such as Chips from the Craftsman Workshops–Number II and Craftsman Fabrics and Needlework from the Craftsman Workshop continued to illustrate the earlier construction, the text in the Descriptive Price List is unambiguous. If any conclusion might be reliably drawn from the drawing in Chips–Number II, it would seem to suggest that by 1907 wooden knobs were available, possibly standard, on this form.
This form was also produced with a maple veneer and inlaid designs, examples of which are held at The Stickley Museum at Craftsman Farms, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (acc. no. AC.1993.1.6).
